HartSong Ranch is located in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills – approximately one hour from Sacramento. The 30 acre facility is abundant with wildlife, water, beautiful trees, flowering plants and green pastures.
History abounds on the sanctuary grounds, as well. The canal that peacefully snakes through the property was built by Chinese laborers during the California gold rush days. The property elevation, however, drops significantly from the front of the property to the back, resulting in a stunning 25 foot waterfall.
The old barn adorning the east pasture was built in the late 1800’s. Visitors always enjoy touring the inside of the structure which is still magnificently supported by huge hand- forged beams and wide plank floors.
A very old and once operable gold mine is dug into a hill on the back side of the property but as of yet, no one has had the courage to explore the interior. Someday…
Geese, ducks, deer, raccoons, skunks and coyotes also call the sanctuary grounds home. On occasion, we are fortunate enough to spot mountain lion and bear.
The 2 acre pond, technically a lake because it has an inlet and an outlet, is spectacular to behold during all seasons. During the spring time months, yellow water irises surround the pond, attracting numerous kinds of pond insects and birds.
Many, many Canada geese elect to return year after year to hatch their young. Because of this, HartSong’s pond sports a goose float, specifically designed so that nesting pairs can peaceful sit their eggs without concerns of predators. Once hatched, the goslings immediately enter the water and never return to the float for the water is the safest place for them to grow and thrive.
School Tours, Private Tours and Field Trips are by appointment only.

What could be better than a day surrounded by animals? Daily we care for 60+ sanctuary animals. This is their forever home. Come to meet the horses(many with special needs) – stroke the gigantic head of Gorby the steer – make an acquaintance with Hornsby the goat and his many other small farm animal friends(they’re all crazy for celery!). Learn about their pasts and see for yourself how love and kindness trumps abuse and neglect – EVERY TIME!
If you are so inclined to enjoy a picnic lunch before or after your tour, HartSong has a beautiful picnic area, shaded by a very old fig tree that overlooks the pond.
Out of respect for the sanctuary residents, we request that no meat, dairy, eggs or other animal food products be consumed on the property. Veggie sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches, fruits, veggies and green salads are recommended.
